Be Careful Of Cultural And Societal Expectations
Cultural and societal expectations play a significant role in financial anxiety. Culture extends beyond just where our families come from or the languages we speak. Culture can include behavioral expectations in the workplace, in places of worship, and even social media trends. For example, “The Black Tax” is a concept that highlights the additional financial burdens often placed on Black individuals as they support both their immediate and extended families. Despite the label, this is a phenomenon that’s experienced in many first generation communities as individuals teeter between the individualist values and the communal practices of their families. This clash in values is one example of how cultural and societal expectations may contribute to financial anxiety and financial stress.
